Legal Resources for LGBTQ+ Rights in New Jersey
While New Jersey is known for being progressive, especially with its stance on LGBTQ+ rights, it is still important to understand your legal rights as an LGBTQ+ individual. There have been significant legal victories over the years that have expanded rights and protections for the LGBTQIA+ community. For example, in 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a landmark ruling, legalized same-sex marriage across the country in Obergefell V. Hodges. However, there are still challenges and gaps in the law. LGBTQ+ folks still face discrimination, and trouble with legal recognition and workplace rights. Below are some legal resources and aid available to help.
New Jersey Division on Civil Rights (DCR):
Enforces the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (NJLAD). This law prohibits discrimination in housing, employment, or public accommodation based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and HIV status.
